Cardiovascular Institute of the South is a world-renowned group of cardiologists, representing nearly every specialty in heart and vascular medicine. Based in Louisiana, United States, CIS includes 14 medical clinics which offer cardiovascular care. Dr. Craig Walker is the group's founder and president. The company was founded in August 1983 as the Houma Heart Clinic in Houma, Louisiana, a community which then had one of the highest death rates from cardiovascular disease in the nation. The town was in the midst of an oil bust and the medical arena had no critical care unit, no catheterization laboratory experience, no sub-specialists and a lack of nursing staff. The company expanded to other communities and continues to grow. In the past 30 years, CIS has grown from a one-man practice under the leadership of Dr. Walker to a world-renowned practice with more than 35 physicians and 500 team members in 14 cities throughout south Louisiana. CIS offers a comprehensive heart and vascular program with specialized medical professionals trained in nuclear cardiology, electrophysiology, prevention services, and lipid management, as well as interventional cardiovascular procedures. The institute offers computed tomography (CT) scan systems and trains others from across the nation in its use. CIS has made significant contributions to the advancement and development of non-surgical treatments for cardiovascular disease and is a world-leader in treating peripheral arterial disease. By using interventional procedures to eliminate the need for amputations, CIS has been able to save limbs and lives. Because the institute is on the leading edge of technology, patients can be assured that each case is thoroughly reviewed and all available treatment options are considered. The institute has earned an international reputation for providing state-of-the-art cardiovascular care and has received international acclaim as a leader of research and development by participating in a growing number of research trials. Today, CIS physicians continue to serve as clinical investigators for many new and innovative medical devices and often share their knowledge by lecturing around the country about the latest methods of treating both cardiac and peripheral arterial disease. CIS locations include: * Houma, Louisiana * Thibodaux, Louisiana * Raceland, Louisiana * Luling, Louisiana * Morgan City, Louisiana * New Iberia, Louisiana * Lafayette, Louisiana at Regional Medical Center of Acadiana * Lafayette, Louisiana at Lafayette General Medical Center * Lafayette, Louisiana at University Hospital & Clinics * Crowley, Louisiana * Breaux Bridge, Louisiana * Opelousas, Louisiana * Zachary, Louisiana * Baton Rouge, Louisiana The continued growth of CIS facilities is evidence of the institute's dynamic commitment to bring quality medical services to the people of south Louisiana. CIS's first facility in Lafayette, Louisiana was designed by HKS, an architectural firm, and built by Brasfield & Gorrie LLC, both of Birmingham, Alabama. CIS's core mission is to provide patients with the highest quality cardiovascular care available. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. That is why prevention and detection are so important. By focusing on prevention and the most advanced treatments, CIS ensures that patients have the best clinical outcomes possible. CIS has also made a commitment to acquiring the latest technology to treat venous disease.
